I’d like to welcome Sierra Dean to the blog today. She has the second book in her Secret McQueen series coming out in a few days so I thought I’d have her by to say hello and let you all get to know her. At the end of the interview is an excerpt that contains spoilers from Book 1, so don’t read it if you haven’t read Book 1! Now, on to the good stuff!
How long have you been writing?
Since I was about ten, so eighteen years.
What genres do you write besides urban fantasy?
I love urban fantasy most, but I do plan to tackle a contemporary, some chick lit, and maybe dip my toes into some steamy paranormal.
What inspired your main characters?
Secret has been an idea of mine for a very long time, and I just built the world around her. I love the idea of a tough girl with a soft centre who isn’t really sure where she belongs in the world. It takes a supernatural heroine and makes her relatable and human.
Do you write to music? If so what was the sound track to A Bloody Good Secret?
I need music to write. My go-to albums are still Between These Lungs by Florence and the Machine (possibly the best writing album in history) and the most recent Band of Skulls album.
Where do you write?
A lot of my writing it done in coffee shops. I also have a house out of the city with no internet and I definitely do the most writing there.
What is the most you have written in one day?
I think my record is 9000 words in one day. I wanted a stiff drink after that.
What are you currently reading?
Grimspace by Ann Aguirre and Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent are in my purse right now, but I’m about to add Lauren Dane’s Once and Again to my Kindle.
What is your best guilty pleasure? (By best I mean worst.)
Coffee. Starbuck’s has their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte. It’s a diet ruiner, but DAMM I love it.
What book do you wish you’d written?
I am in love with a lot of authors. Rachel Vincent, Ann Aguirre, Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs and Charlaine Harris are the big ones. I wouldn’t say I wished I’d written any of their books because they wouldn’t be nearly as good, but I think Armstrong’s Bitten shaped modern urban fantasy for the better, and Aguirre’s Hell Fire is a brilliant example of how an author can make a mundane backdrop something truly frightening. I am constantly inspired by these women.
You have to jump out of a plane w/ a holey parachute or edit your 100K MS by hand, what. do. you. do?
God, I think my sense of self-preservation says edit by hand. But my gut reaction was “the plane, the plane!”
Coffee/Tea? Both. I live of hot beverages.
Cake/Cookies? Cake. Specifically carrot.
Coke/Pepsi? Coke Zero.
Heels/Flats? Heels for the look, flats for comfort. I LOVE shoes.
BDB/The Order? *sheepish look* I haven’t read either series so I can’t say.
Vampires/Werewolves? Hybrid, of course.
Cats/Dogs? Both. I have two cats and a dog.
Fly/Drive? I love road trips, but I think I have to choose flying.
A Bloody Good Secret
Secret McQueen, Book 2
Coming September 20, 2011
THIS BLURB CONTAINS MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR SOMETHING SECRET THIS WAY COMES
You can’t keep a good Secret for long.
After cheating death twice in one night, confessing her true nature to her werewolf soul mates and being asked to kill one of her closest friends, Secret took a much-needed vacation. By running away.
Now she’s back in town—dragged kicking and screaming—determined to clear Holden Chancery’s name. Right after she finds out what he’s accused of. It shouldn’t be hard— Holden has a habit of using their new and scintillating psychic bond to break into her thoughts and dreams at some very, shall we say, awkward moments.
Just a few things stand in her way: a secretive Tribunal leader, a group of would- be vampire slayers and two werewolf boyfriends who refuse to let her operate in her customary lone-wolf style. Even less amusing are the terrifying creatures that someone is using in an attempt to gain control of the council. Even for this out-of-the-ordinary bounty hunter, it’s a challenge with potentially deadly teeth.
Warning: Contains an ever-plucky heroine with no shortage of weapons, super-hot mind games, an ever-complicated love triangle and one hell of a creepy amusement park.
